i had a nice, blathering post all planned out in my head for this morning, about nothing in particular. then i woke up and remembered what day it is. suddenly the trivial seems so much more so today.

so instead, some reflection. tell me, true believers, where were you five years ago today?

me, right around this time i was sitting in my office with the entire staff of my company piled in, watching a live news feed off the bbc. we worked in a medical building at the time, so we couldn’t get any television reception, and all the major us news sites were overloaded. bbc was the first thing i found with a live feed that was actually accessible . no one said a word, except for the vp at the time, and all she could manage was an occasional 'oh my god'. its funny, the details you remember; i can still hear her now.

so where were you?

by the way, thanks misshellionhell for that pic. its like a beautiful donkey kick in the gut. i love it.

Apparently, when you visit the papal residence, you're not allowed to use the pope's bathroom. a special exception was made for the wish-kid that got sent there, and i do believe that makes her the only american ever to see the pope's can. unfortunately, no photography was allowed in the pope's commode, and no one was allowed to escort her in. so the question before us is, what's so special about the pope's bathroom that they don't want us mere mortals to see?

Poll #794846 The Pope's Bidet
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 6

So what do YOU think is so special about the Pope's Commode?

Prize will be given to the best answer, when i decide what it is.

so i was just sitting outside, drinking my coffee and smoking my cigarette when i suddenly realized i had been staring at nothing in particular for at least five minutes straight. i then had one of those introspective moments when you try and recall what the hell you had been thinking about just a moment before. here, in no order whatsoever, is what is currently on my mind:
1) trying to remember all the lyrics to She's So Cold, by the Rolling Stones
2) trying to arrange weekend plans with eight different people in two different cities, for a weekend that starts tomorrow
3) trying not to think about a job i just applied for, which is a lower-level position than the one i currently have but pays nearly ten grand more
4) trying to consider how this potential career shift would swing the oft-talked about but little-acted on plans for moving
5) trying not to consider all the implications of leaving the place i've been working at for five years now
6) trying to arrange my finances in such a way that allows me to do everything i want to this weekend, doesn’t leave me destitute and (here's the kicker) actually makes sense.
7) trying to process the over six hundred pages of web comics i've read in the past two days
8) trying to work out a possibly-fatal plot hole in a story i've been vainly trying to write
9) trying to remember the username and password i set up to a website i signed up for over three years ago
10) trying to figure out when i'm ever going to get around to getting a haircut, because seriously: hello 1975
11) trying to remember what it was i dreamed last night that left me with a vaguely unsatisfied feeling all day at the current state of reality

that, in short, is currently what's occupying my mind. had it not been for the sharp stink of burning flesh as my cigarette burned down to my fingers, i'd probably still be sitting there. if my computer could multitask as well as my mind does, it probably would have taken over the world by now.

it was spring in the long ago time of 1996; my junior year of high school was drawing to a close and for the last time ever i showed up at gym class and promptly buggered off after attendance to have a cigarette on the roof. on that bright and shining morning, i thought my gym-going days a thing of the past - never again would i step foot in that human-sized hamster wheel, and i was damn proud of that fact. see, any sort of tone or musculature i could ever claim came as no fault of my own; i was blessed with an almost hyperactive metabolism. i could (and did) eat whatever i want, whenever i want, and never have to worry about expanding waistlines or paunches; the things that troubled lesser mortals were but a theory to me. why, my brief stint in construction provided me with more muscles than i rightly deserved, and those stayed with me years after i last hoisted a cinder block. i suppose it was part of the immortality of youth, the carelessness with which i treated my body.

as the poet once said, the times they are a’ changing.

i sit here today next to a bag; within this bag are a pair of sweats, a towel or two and an actual pair of sneakers. think, true believers: have you ever even seen me in sneakers? up until this morning, i wasn't even certain i owned a pair. and yet here i am, with all the accoutrements of war; soon i shall don my armor and go off to do battle against the effects of the evil carvel empire and that whorespawn bitch, mrs entenmann. you heard it here first, folks: in a little under two hours, i go *dramatic pause* TO THE GYM!!

i realize that my current plight will not elicit much pity from the general masses; concerning myself with things most people have been conscious of for decades rarely wins any support. for me, tho, it's the end of an era, an admittance of my own mortality, and the end of a sacred vow: to never again break a sweat unless in the most noble of pursuits. this is a dark day, my good people, and no mistaking it. if i survive, expect a full report on my return. if i fall, try not to hold the sneakers against me.
